Dr. Joseph Wilson received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. As a Flight Surgeon in the United States Navy, and as a key member of an F-18 Fighter Attack Squadron, he served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Constellation.

Upon completion of his Orthopaedic training at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC, Dr. Wilson spent an additional 18 months of subspecialty training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder surgery. He completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he was also a assistant team physician for DePaul University and its Division I Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. While in Chicago, he also served as an assistant team physician for both the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.

In 2009, Dr. Wilson was selected and received the Alps Surgery Institute International Shoulder Fellowship in Annecy, France. Among the 44 Fellows in the history of the Institute, he is one of just three Americans to have been selected.

Dr. Laurent Lafosse, founder of the Alps Surgery Institute, and considered by many to be one of the premier arthroscopic shoulder surgeons in the world, was his teacher and mentor in the education of shoulder surgical procedures.

Dr. Wilson has been in practice since 2001, and he not only has a unique range of knowledge in General Orthopaedics, he has a true passion for what he does for his patients. His specialized knowledge in advanced arthroscopic techniques of both the shoulder and knee allow him to assess the best possible surgical procedure for each injury.

His military service as a Naval medical officer and his experiences as a professional sports team physician give Dr. Wilson a rare background for performing shoulder and knee arthroscopy and reconstruction.

His specialized training in Europe has allowed Dr. Wilson to gain specific skills and expertise in various arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures and treatments that are not commonly utilized here in the United States.

As former Academic All-American and Team Captain of both the University of Virginia and the Gold Medal winning USA World Lacrosse Team, Dr. Wilson understands the demands and desires of today’s active population, and promises to continue his focus of compassion and care for patients of all ages. His rare blend of experience gives his patients the best chance for a satisfactory recovery, not only because of his background but because of his passion.
